Division

  • Facilitate special events for the younger generation

Custodial Services

  • Custodial is a very diverse staff, serving the diverse needs of the University; building cleaners, set-up workers, swimming pool operators, special events set-up, etc. Many employees are prepared to execute indoor and outdoor events while making it economical for event coordinator and event patrons. The MSU land-grant philosophy drives this people-oriented vision of Custodial
  • Staff is half students (on seasonal basis) and half regulars — the system depends on the work of students. Custodial is a 24/7 labor operation every day of the year, which makes Custodial unique from other departments.
  • Custodial keeps inventory of flag of nations —  all nations that U.S. has diplomatic relations with, used when foreign dignitaries visit campus

Engineering and Architectural Services

  • Have adopted strict LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, standards for existing and newly constructed buildings —  ensuring sustainability and environmentally-friendly construction/renovation
  • Campus engineers/architects use function and design to promote nostalgic image of campus (mostly maintaining the look of early campus buildings while allowing modern amenities, use)
  • Creation of green space (i.e. Sesquicentennial Gardens around Benefactors Plaza)

Landscape Services

  • Planted double the amount of trees in spring 2008 than in previous years.
    • Past averages/spring: 600 trees
    • Spring 2008: 1,100 trees
  • Managed by Gerry Dobbs, winner of 2007 Green Star Award by Professional Grounds Maintenance Society, a national horticulture award for his work in a Kentucky arboretum

Maintenance Services

  • Newly formed “commissioning” department uses LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, practices and itemized procedures to ensure campus building safety and sustainability
  • Diverse staff maintains the structure and function of campus systems everyday (i.e.  metal workers, electricians, elevator mechanics, heating/ventilation/air conditioning mechanics, glaziers, locksmiths, masons, painters, carpenters, pipefitters, plumbers, refrigeration mechanics and roofers)

Power & Water

  • Steam provides energy for nearly 56,000 students, faculty and support staff
  • In a given year, the Power Plant generates 250 billion watts of electricity for the MSU community
  • One of two Big Ten universities to join the Chicago Climate Exchange, the world’s first active voluntary, legally binding integrated trading system to reduce emissions of all six major greenhouse gases.

Recycling

  • New recycling center, completed in summer 2009, will double campus recycling capacity by 2013
  • Has adopted Be Spartan Green campaign, using the management of recycled/waste materials to keep campus sustainable, cleaner
  • Have introduced a campus-wide recycling initiative, which will be in general practice in fall 2008 to prepare for the new recycling center

Telecommunications

  • Serves as the 'telephone company' of Michigan State University
  • As of summer 2007, eight thousand campus employees were connected to a telephone system created by Telecommunication PIAs (Avaya Private Branch Exchange system was created in late 2006)
  • Department hopes all of campus will be digitally connected by 2013, through its 'Fiber Next Generation' project
  • The Telecommunication Systems staff has connected 65 miles of fiber optics across campus.
  • Each year, staff handles over 200,000 directory assistance calls.
  • The Telecommunication Systems at MSU carries approximately 8.7 million minutes of long distance telephone calls each year.
  • Telecommunication Systems supports 25,000 telephone lines on 219 separate phone systems across campus.

Transportation Services

  • MSU Bikes Service Center – full service bike repair and rental facility devoted exclusively to the MSU community
  • Automotive
    • Introduction of hybrid vehicle fleet in 2007 – Transportation houses 20 Toyota Civic hybrids for campus emplo­­yee use
